The Basics of Vesting With Your Employer

The Basics of Vesting With Your EmployerThe Basics of Vesting With Your EmployerThe concept of vesting is important to every employee of a firm offering benefits ranging from 401(K) matching contributions to restricted stock or stock options. Many employers offer these benefits as an incentive to join and/or remainwith the firm. Many of these benefits are subject to a vesting schedule. You should understand the language and terms for vesting in your employers various contribution plans before making a commitment. While some employer contributions are fully vested at the time they are provided, others are subjected to time limits and operate on an escalatingscale over time known as a vesting schedule. Example of 401(K) Contributions With Immediate Vesting One example is if your employer offers matching funds to your 401(K) deductions up to 10% of your total contributions. Lets say that you designate that $10,000 be put into your 401(K) this year. That means, your employer will con tribute an additional $1,000 (or 10%) in matching funds, with immediate vesting. The immediate vesting means that the contribution belongs to you in its entirety, although any withdrawals are subject to the IRS rules governing these plans. Example of Stock Grants That Might Vest Immediately or, Over Time Anotlageher example might be a firm that offers employees restricted stock grant on their hire date, with 100% vesting in the stock occurring on the employees third-anniversary date. This gestalt of vesting is called cliff vesting and means that you have no claim on the items offered until the actual third-anniversarydate is reached. If you leave the firm after two years that means you would not be able to take (or cash in) any of your stock grants. An alternative to cliff vesting is graded (or graduated) vesting which is governed by a vesting schedule. Using the example above of the restricted stock grant, a graded approach might suggest that 25% of your shares vest in years on e and two (for a total of 50%) and the remaining shares (valuing 50%) vest on your third anniversary. This way, if you leave the firm after your first year, you would have control of 25% of the shares, and so forth. Example of Stock Option Grant Vesting The use of stock options is common in many privately held start-ups and technology firms. This stock option offers the right to acquire a share of stock at a particular price on (or before) a particular date. Instead of a date, another right-to-acquire option might be a trigger event such as a change of control of the firm. In this case, change of control is merely a fancy term for the acquisition of your company by another firm. Entrepreneurs love this kind of vesting option. And why not. Lets say you have been granted 10,000 options with a stock price of $3.50 per share. If the terms of your stock option grant indicate that they fully vested at change of control and another firm acquires your firm at $4.00 per share, your optio ns immediately vest at the closing of the acquisition. This means you have the right to buy the 10,000 shares at $3.50 each and immediately sell them for $4.00 each, thereby making a profit of .50 cents per share. Example of Qualified Retirement Plan Vesting Many government, municipal, and education jobs offer a qualified retirement plan that is governed by a vesting schedule based on your years of service. As your years of service increase so does your vesting percentage until you reach a maximum of 100% at a future anniversary date. However, if you leave your job prior to becoming fully vested, you receive a future retirement benefit at some percentage of the total, but not the total. The Bottom Line Pay close attention to the language surrounding vesting for any of the benefits offered by your employer that involve contributions. The vesting schedule you choose may dictate your career options, including choosing to remain with the firm until you reach an important annive rsary date.

Apply Now for a 2015 WISE Internship

Apply Now for a 2015 WISE Internship Apply Now for a 2015 WISE Internship ASME is currently accepting applications from engineering students who are interested in representing the Society in the 2015 Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) program. Applications for the internship, which will take place next summer, are due Dec. 31. Ranked as one of the best internships in the U.S. by the Princeton Review, the WISE program offers engineering students the opportunity to spend the summer in Washington, D.C., learning about the interaction of technology and public policy. The 2015 WISE internship term will take place from May 31-Aug. 1, 2015. Selected from a nationwide competition, WISE interns spend nine weeks learning how government officials make decisions on complex technological issues and how engineers can contribute to legislative and regulatory public policy decisions. At the end of the nine weeks, each intern finalizes a public policy paper on a topic of interest, and presents his or zu sich findings on Capitol Hill. After the completion of her internship this August, ASME WISE intern Rebecca Ciez described the WISE program as a great experience to enhance an engineering education. The program draws on the diverse backgrounds of other students and mentors from a variety of fields, helping to enrich the policy research process, continued Ciez, an ASME student member. Having the opportunity to come to Washington and meet with elected officials and public servants working on science and technology issues gave me the unique skill set necessary for interacting with the policy space. Another 2014 ASME WISE intern, ASME student member James Gwinn, agreed. The WISE internship is a fantastic experience, he said. It is basically a nine-week-long, behind-the-scenes tour of our nations capital. The WISE program provided me with a unique perspective on the important role engineers play in the legislative process. ASME stude nt members Rebecca Ciez (left) and James Gwinn served as ASMEs 2014 Washington Internships for Students of Engineering (WISE) interns for nine weeks this summer. To learn more about the 2014 ASME WISE interns and their papers, visit http//ppec.asme.org. In addition to third- and fourth-year engineering students, recent graduates who are beginning an engineering policy-related masters program will also be considered for the program. WISE interns will be provided housing in a dormitory on the campus of George Washington University, and receive a stipend to assist with living and travel expenses. Applicants for the WISE internship must be a citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States. For more information, or to apply, visit the ASME WISE program website at www.asme.org/about-asme/advocacy-government-relations/washington-internships-for-students-of-engineering. Getting Your Resume Into the Right Hands

Getting Your Resume Into the Right HandsGetting Your Resume Into the Right HandsCombine new-age research with old-fashioned correspondence to increase your chances for success in the job search. The job search is an ever-changing landscape that seems to get mora crowded and more complex by the day.It often seems that when you submit your resume online, it just goes into what experts call the recruiting black hole and is never heard from again. That could be because its been relegated to the bottom of a resume pile that is over 1,000 pages deep. More likely, its some kind of a digital version of that, one where resumes that are customized to trick a computer are assigned a higher priority while your resume sinks to the bottom of the list. There are ways to even the odds in the digital job search by strategically using the right keywords and following a couple dozen other rules on how to send a resume by e-mail, but once you click send theres got to be something you can do other than ju st pray that it gets to an actual human being.Abby Kohut, a job search counselor and founder of Absolutely Abby, says there are still some moves you could make to ensure that your resume reaches a person. If you go with the black hole, theres no guarantee the recruiter will see it, said Kohut, a former human resources recruiter of 16 years. You just never know if someone is going to find you that way.Her strategy combines new-age research with old-fashioned correspondence. Its important to get your resume to the hiring manager, she said. Find them on LinkedIn and send them your resume in the mail.Thats not to say a job seeker should simply bypass the companys entire candidate tracking system. These more traditional tactics should be used in conjunction with the digital ones with one track going to the hiring manager and the other digital track going to the recruiter, if not the dreaded black hole.To locate the hiring manager, Kohut recommends starting with an advanced search on Linked In seeking the name of the company, the particular department that interests you and the zip code for the position you want. There probably wont be anyone who comes up with the title Hiring Manager, but anyone with a Director or Vice President title is probably your target. If you get to somebody near the hiring manager, that might be good enough, Kohut said. People dont like to destroy mail, they like to pass it on to the right person. While e-mail is easily forwarded or deleted, a hard copy is much more likely to be read, especially if the envelope is handwritten and marked personal and confidential, she said. Its very effective, she said. Someone will actually see it.This old-school method of job searching is something of a lost art nowadays, but thats what could make a candidate stand out.Making a call is good too - any of the old techniques. Even faxes are good, she said. Nobody does them anymore.

Recipe for Applying for Federal Jobs Fast

Recipe for Applying for Federal Jobs FastRecipe for Applying for Federal Jobs FastRecipe for Applying for Federal Jobs FastLet me show you how I applied for 4 federal jobs in 90 minutes yesterday with 3 internetbrowsers and 4 resume versions ready to go.What you will need1. Several resume versions in your USAJOBS Resume builder Account. Each resume should be named for the occupational series the resume represents, i.e., Contract Specialist, Teacher, Background Investigator, Program Analyst, Park Ranger.2. Several vacancy announcements matching your qualifications.3. Three browser windows opened simultaneously with the following webpages USAJOBS announcement page USAJOBS resume builder page Questionnaire page for that particular announcement (open in Firefox)4. Any necessary documents (such as transcripts) in PDF format to upload. Or have ready to telefax if needed with official fax cover sheet.DirectionsStep 1 Review Vacancy Announcements (Browser 1 / USAJOBS)After you have found som e possible job announcements, analyze each announcement. Read the grade level location job title determine if this is right for you. Go to the Qualifications tab and read Specialized Experience. If this sounds right for you. then to go next step. Look at the duties and specialized experience and make a list of at least 5-10 keywords to add into one of your resume versions. For this particular job search, I analyzed a number of announcements and narrowed them down to these fourTeacher, USDA, Forest Service, Job Corps, GS 9, Permanent, Full-time, Avuecentral.com, selected 3 states Training Coordinator, USDA, Forest Service, Job Corps, GS 7, 6 month seasonal, Avuecentral.com, selected 3 statesBackground Investigator, OPM, GS 7, full-time permanent, USAJOBS and applicationmanager.gov, selected 2 statesContract Specialist, HHS, Program Service Center, Rockville, MD, USAJOBS and Quickhire questionnaireStep 2 Get Your Resumes Ready (Browser 2 /Your USAJOBS Resume Builder page)Keep this page up on a separate browser ALL the time.Select a resume for each announcement. Edit the resumes by adding keywords from the announcements, review them to make sure that all information is up to date, and RENAME the resumes so that each reflects the position. If you dont have a resume for a particular announcement, DUPLICATE one of the others, and follow the steps above.Step 3 Hit Apply Now (Browser 1 / USAJOBS Announcement)Now that your resume is ready, you can go back to the vacancy announcement and hit the APPLY NOW button. You will see a BRIDGE page that will TAKE YOU SOMEWHERE. On this bridge page, you will probably be asked to select a resume from your USAJOBS Resume Builder page. Select the newly named resume and the application will take you to a new page.Step 4 Answer the Questionnaire (Browser 3 / Questionnaire)NOTE about the third browser When you go to the questionnaire page, you will move away from your original USAJOBS announcement. Open a new browser with the announceme nt in USAJOBS again, so you dont forget what you are applying for. When you read the questions, you might wonder about the context of the question. You can go back to the annoucnement and read the Duties or Qualifications or Mission again to try to understand the questions. The questionnaire page could be applicationmanager.gov, avuecentral.com, quickhire.com, or monster.com. The government agencies uses a variety of questionnaires for their assessment questions. Start the questionnaire usually with the tabs on the left. Answer the questions. Most of the questions do NOT require essays now, so they are easier than before. Read them carefully. They could have trick questions. I answered 87 questions yesterday for Background Investigator and right in the middle there were two questions about being a fireman and ambulance driver working in emergency planning work. Good thing I welches awake and reading carefully. The questions were easy.Avuecentral.com I wanted to use my USAJOBS resum e instead of completing the entire avuecentral builder. But the builder insisted that I complete the Avuecentral builder. I had to put at least two relevant Work History experiences in the builder and at least one education section, so I did that. Then I uploaded the USAJOBS resume for the entire application. I also uploaded the transcript which was over at USAJOBS. I took it out of my USAJOBS account and put it into the avuecentral account.SummaryI applied to four applications in 90 minutes. All of them had questionnaires with no essays or KSAs. I was prepared, however. I had 4 resumes in the USAJOBS builder, each named carefully, and transcript was already in USAJOBS. I found four good announcements that were GS 7/9. I really found five, but one of the announcements turned out to require a qualification that my client didnt have a Masters degree or other post graduate degree. I didnt see it until I was in screen 2 in a questionnaire. But I had only wasted 10 minutes restructurin g the resume with 5 keywords and renaming it.The reason this was fast was because I was organized with my browsers. I had the USAJOBS Resume Builder page up and ready for analysis, adding keywords and renaming. I knew I was going to some kind of questionnaire system, so I was prepared with the right resume version. When I was turned over to the questionnaire page, I went back to a NEW browser and opened up the USAJOBS announcement again (you cant go BACK from the questionnaire, and you might need to refer to the announcement again). So, those are my three browsers that helped me stay efficient and focused with my applications.Well see what happens with the applications this week. The next step will be to go back to USAJOBS, applicationmanager.gov, and avuecentral.com in one week (next Monday) and see if they have scored any of the applications and if there are any notices in the application tracking page. That will be interesting.Good luck with your speedy federal job applications with three browsers.HOT TIPSBe sure to check off Temp, Term, Permanent, Seasonal whatever types of positions you can accept. Temp and Term positions could be changed into a permanent one after hire.Cover letter You can add a cover letter by browsing and uploading or adding into ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.Review your resumes frequently to update them.

The Dos and Donts of Elaborating on Your Resume

The Dos and Donts of Elaborating on Your Resume The Dos and Donts of Elaborating on Your Resume Remember the Friends episode where Phoebe discovers Joeys resume is riddled with skills like tap dancing, archery and horseback riding, none of which he actually knows how to do? Joeys reasoning for including the faux skills? He could technically do those things if he tried, just bedrngnis well.Like Joey, many job seekers elaborate parts of their resumes to make them seem like a better match for the stelle. In some ways, exaggerating your resume is a big no-no. However, there are certain aspects of your professional history that can and should be exaggerated a bit. Weve laid out clearly the dos and donts of exaggerating on your resume to help guide you through the writing process.Do ElaboratePerspectiveBe straightforward about your professional history, but use a perspective that makes them as positive as possible. For example, if you fell short of a goal but still showed impressive gain, a statement like, Increased sales by 20% reflects much better than Reached 20% of my 50% sales goal. Never lie about your history, just figure out how to show it in the best light. WordingApplicant tracking systems have made the importance of specific wording a major part of resume writing. Now, hiring managers will search resumes based on the job title. For example, if you are applying for a job with the title Social Media Coordinator and your previous job title was Social Media Expert, it is acceptable (and advised) to use the title Social Media Coordinator for that position on your resume, as long as the job requirements for each match. If you feel more comfortable, you can put your exact previous title in parentheses beside the new one.Specific SkillsThe number one sign of an ATS optimized resume is the use of relevant skills. Skills/keywords are the words that are used repeatedly in a job posting. These keywords might be specific programs like Photoshop or Adobe Dreamweaver, or skills like Spanish fluency. You should always pick out the keywords from each job posting and weave them into your resumeas long as they are truthful.Dont ElaborateDatesDates of employment can accentuate gaps in work history, but that isnt a reason to lie by extending them beyond your actual time of employment. Having periods of unemployment is hugely common and frequently seen by hiring managers, so you shouldnt feel like you need to hide them. Include correct dates (which help the ATS sort your work history properly) and answer honestly any questions about the gaps in later interviews. Nonexistent SkillsSorry Joey Claiming you have skills that you dont will only get you into trouble later. Even if you land the job based on false skills, youll end up falling short of expectations early on. If none of the skills/keywords in the job posting apply to you, it might be a sign that the job isnt the right fit for you. Move on to job postings with keywords that you can honestly mirror in your resume.Education and CertificationsUnfortunately, theres no wiggle room when it comes to education. For example, if a job position requires a bachelors degree and you have an associates degree, exaggerating is not an option. You can still apply if you think youre a great match, but be honest about your level of education and let the hiring manager decide how much it matters. The same goes for certifications be straightforward to avoid later issues. Bending your work history to fit a job is not necessarily a bad tactic, as long as you know which pieces are tweak-able and which shouldnt be messed with. Keep it honest and positive and your resume will end up landing you the perfect job.

2 Ways to Market Your Candidates Better - Spark Hire

2 Ways to Market Your Candidates Better - Spark HireAs recruiters, we are always looking for ways to better market our candidates in order to make a successful placement with our client. There are two important things you can do that will help you sell your skilled candidates.1. Create a Candidate PresentationWhen you submit a candidate to your client, hopefully you are doing more than just forwarding a resume. The candidate presentation is key in recruiting. If you do not give your client a reason to want to speak with or even look at a candidate, then you will be a far cry from that placement you need.Creating a professional portfolio containing details about the candidates experience, in addition to your professional evaluation of a candidate can be a great attention grabber for a hiring manager. When you send over more information about the candidate such as cultural fit, hobbies, reason for interest in the job and company, as well as your reason for submitting the candidate, you a re clearly giving the hiring manager a reason to look into your candidate.Recruiting is sales and like with any sales job, you must point out the why to your customers. Why should your hiring manager be interested in your candidate? What does your candidate have that your hiring manager needs? As a recruiter, it is important to know what your clients hot buttons are. You should be thinking of these hot buttons as you are interviewing and submitting each candidate. When you have this information, you are able to hit the right buttons in your presentation which will leave your client wanting to know more.2. Use VideoAnother important way to market your candidates better is by using video. Your first thought may be of video interviews, but you should also think of encouraging your candidates to create a video resume. While video interviews are an excellent way to market your candidate to a hiring manager, a video resume can do wonders for your anfangsbuchstabe marketing of the candidate .Having a video resume of a candidate to include in your presentation to your client can really help your candidate stand out. A video resume will allow the hiring manager to quickly see the candidates personality and energy. This can create more of a personal feeling to the candidate presentation which could be lacking with a standard print resume. As always, coach your candidate on the best way to create a video resume, just as you would regard any changes made to a print resume. Your candidate will appreciate the help and your client will appreciate the added addition of video to your presentation. How do you better market your candidates? How to Overcome That Awkward Silence in Interviews

How to Overcome That Awkward Silence in InterviewsHow to Overcome That Awkward Silence in Interviews Weve all been there what we thought was an excellent interview quickly degrades as we sit with the hiring manager in silence- left only to wonder what we have done wrong to encurage our colleague to stop speaking entirely. (Talk about awkward) And so, we get it The silence in an interview is rough, says job search and career expert J. T. ODonnell , and not only because we perceive the hiring manager to be in charge of the interview and flow of the conversation. If there is a silence, we dont want to take over the situation and try to fill it, commiserates ODonnell. Sometimes the hiring manager is taking notes. Whatever the case, we need to just be patient, take a deep breath and wait for them to re-engage.But when thats not the case- when a hiring manager doesnt take the lead and fill that odd void- you can step up. Here are five ways you can overcome awkward interv iew silence. It will be tough to grin and bear that awkward moment, but ODonnell encourages you to lean into the silence. Try to smile at the hiring manager and stay still in your seat, she encourages. The mora fidgety you are, the more distracting it is. Show your ability to stay calm and composed. To push through that silence- and stay silent- ODonnell says you should focus your thoughts on what you believe are your best traits, which will help your mindset will stay positive and your natural facial expressions will convey that positivity. Just because you dont speak doesnt mean you cant speak in a silence showing a confident, happy person in your body language and facial expressions. You may be thinking, why would I stay silent in an interview? But heres the thing Some silence is always parte of natural conversation, says career coach Hallie Crawford. And a pause here or there in an interview is not only OK, but its expected. Pausing is part of the normal rhythm of conversation, Crawford says. And, in this case, show that you are still engaged in the conversation by sitting tall, smiling, and making eye contact, she advises. You may not realize it, but how you are behaving could create those uber-awkward silent moments. There may be awkward periods of silence if you are nervous and rushing too quickly through your answers, points out Crawford. But luckily, there is an easy fix, according to Crawford Try to calm your nerves and your thoughts by taking deep breaths and speaking at your normal pace, Crawford says. It is also helpful to take a few seconds to process a question before you reply. If you arent sure how to reply after a brief pause, then you can ask the hiring manager for a moment before you respond.Picture it you give a knock-it-out-of-the-ballpark answer, but you are still met with crickets. Karen Elizaga, an executive coach and author of Find Your Sweet Spot, says you should take this opportunity to be proactive. Aske, would you like me to clar ify what I just mentioned? Elizaga suggests, or say, Given what Ive just explained, how do you think that might work here? That puts the onus on the manager to respond. Is your hiring manager taking a long time looking at your resume or your portfolio? asks Crawford. If so, now is the time to speak up and ask if you can address any potential issues. Try something like, Do you have any hesitations about my qualifications I can address? Crawford suggests. Or, if theyre taking long time after youve shared one of your star stories, try something like, Is there a part of the example I gave that you would like me to clarify? It provides you with an opportunity to keep the conversation moving and address anything the manager has an issue with. When that awkward silence becomes too loud to bear, take the opportunity to expand on the answer youve just given or to answer the interviewers question in a different way that allows you to flex your muscle and share the diversity of your experience , suggests Elizaga. Say something like, In thinking about it some more, she says to begin, and then share an insight related to the question on which youre on.If youre sitting in an uncomfortable silence, its time to ask your own questions to fill that quiet. After all, the silence may be the managers way of providing you with an opportunity to ask questions or make comments, points out Crawford. So, take advantage of the opportunity to address any concerns you might have about the position, the work environment, or something else that might have come up during the interview. You can also take the unexpected silence as a time to let the manager know youre excited about the position and the possibility of working for the organization.

5 Good Reasons to Consider Turning Down a Job Offer

5 Good Reasons to Consider Turning Down a Job Offer 5 Good Reasons to Consider Turning Down a Job Offer You’ve been offered a job- and with the unemployment rate these days, that’s a feat- so, why would you turn it down? Well, there are a few reasons. Take it from me. About a year ago, I received an offer for a position that was, in theory, a perfect fit for my skills and goals. Plus, the company would increase my salary by 25% and promised mentorship and travel. But something just didn’t feel right, and after a good deal of back and forth, I said no. I was unemployed for another two months, but a better opportunity came along (with an even higher salary, to boot), and I haven’t regretted it a day since. When I asked my friends if anyone else had ever turned down a job offer, I was surprised to hear how many had made the difficult decision when they knew something just wasn’t right. Of course, turning down a job offer is a privileged circumstance to have, and that decision as well as all of the following advice should be taken with a dose of reality that the perfect job- the one that fulfills every item on your wish list- rarely exists. That said, finding yourself in the wrong job can have a big impact on your long-term career and happiness, and it’s important to make sure you’re not missing out on what you’re really looking for just to have nailed down something. Learn from my experience, and consider these reasons why turning down a job offer might make sense for you. 1. Mission You need to care, to some degree, about what your company is hoping to achieve, but it’s easy to get too excited by any great-sounding job and overlook when an organization is not the best fit. It’s also easy to take the company’s mission statement at face value, without digging further. In fact, the job I turned down at first seemed perfectly aligned with the type of work I was hoping to do. But when I spoke with former employees, individuals at similar organizations, and mentors who work in the space, and when I compared its model to other organizations I trusted, I realized that it was not one I completely respected. So, do your research beyond what you read on the company website- by talking to people who are familiar with the company, reading up on its current news, and browsing reviews on Glassdoor. Many conversations and further research helped me realize that I couldn’t work at 100% and be my best self if I didn’t believe in what I was working toward. 2. Lack of Growth Every job you have should add to your resume- and not just in terms of taking up space. If you’re not going to have growth opportunities in terms of roles, knowledge, and new projects or responsibilities, it’s a fair reason to be hesitant about accepting the job. Take an inventory of what you’re already great at and the skills you want to gain. Will this new job allow you to work on these skills, or do the things you already excel at in a new market or with bigger name clients and teams? Even if you’re looking at a horizontal job move, you should have the opportunity to take on more responsibilities or see a greater possibility of promotion. Remember: If you’re not growing, you’ll either get bored too quickly and not perform at your best, you’ll get too comfortable with what you know and passed up for promotion, or you’ll be looking for a new job again soon. Take a critical eye to the position description and talk to potential colleagues to see if it’ll really be a good fit for you. 3. Warning Signs The hiring process is scattered, your potential manager is already emailing you on off-hours, or the potential colleagues you met were rude or inappropriate. These signs are easy to dismiss- hey, maybe it’s just a busy season- but they should actually be treated as red flags. Busy season or not, the way you are treated from the first day of communication in the hiring process is very telling as to how you will be treated as an employee. I’m betting you want to be somewhere for at least a while, right? Look for a hiring process that includes thoughtful interview questions and e-mails, great interviews with multiple employees, and signs that the people who work there are happy, respected, and taken seriously. If you don’t see that, I’d definitely think twice. 4. Timing It sounds like a small thing, but sometimes the timing on a job offer just isn’t right. A few of my friends turned down job offers to take that extended trip they’ve always dreamed about, or because they wanted to wait to see what other job offers would come through. Of course, sometimes the company wants an immediate answer, which forces you into a quick decision, but if they want you badly enough, they’ll wait. And if not? Could be another warning sign. If you’ve been on the market for a while and unemployment is beginning to bring too many negative consequences in your life, it might be time to take that offer. But if you have many interviews and opportunities lined up, you can feel more secure in considering turning one down if the timing is just not right. 5. Money Of course, money certainly isn’t the ultimate factor of consideration. Many people are much happier in positions that are more personally fulfilling- whether that means better career growth or a more aligned mission- than they would be making more somewhere else. That said, in a day and age where companies are constantly trying to do and get more for less, it’s important to make sure that any job you take is the right move financially. Several of my friends have turned down job offers because the salary couldn’t support them or their families. If this is the case- and if you’ve tried negotiating for a better package or more opportunities- it might make sense to look for, well, greener pastures. What does turning down a job offer do to your career trajectory? Adam Poswolsky recently discussed the deceiving career ladder in the Washington Post, noting that: “20-somethings are still erringly being told to figure out their (single) calling, find the perfect first job in that field, and then maintain a linear career trajectory.” In fact, he writes: “There is no one way up, just a series of opportunities and mini-experiments that get you closer and closer to discovering what’s meaningful.” That might just mean turning down a just-OK job offer to look for something that’s a better fit for your goals, growth, and personal alignment. If you do turn down an offer, here’s some advice for doing so gracefully. Photo of sticky note courtesy of Shutterstock.

Student Job Interview Questions and Answers

Student Job Interview Questions and Answers Student Job Interview Questions and Answers Interviewing as a student or recent student is unique because you don’t often have as much work experience as other job seekers. However, you still have a lot to offer. The key to impressing any employer is to be prepared and to position your own unique situational skills. Read below for information on types of student interview questions, and advice on how to answer those questions. Also review job interview questions that employers commonly ask high school students, college students, and graduates seeking part-time, summer, and full-time entry-level jobs. There are also sample answers for each of the interview questions. Types of Student Job Interview Questions There are a number of types of interview questions a student or recent student might be asked in interviews. Behavioral Interview Questions Many interview questions will be  behavioral interview questions. These questions require you to provide an example of a time when you did something work-related in the past. For example, an interviewer might ask, “Tell me about a time you had to complete a group project under a tight deadline.” Interviewers ask questions about your past to see what kind of an employee you might be in the future. These kinds of questions require you to think of examples from past experiences. To answer these questions, use the  STAR interview response technique. Describe the specific example you are thinking of (it helps to think of examples in advance). Explain the situation, and what you did to either solve the problem or achieve success. Then, describe the result. As a student or recent student, you might not have a lot of work experience. You can draw on experiences as a student, an intern, or even a volunteer. If you participated in any extracurricular activities, you can talk about those experiences too. Situational Interview Questions Situational interview questions  ask you to consider a possible future situation at work. An interviewer might ask, “How would you handle working on three tasks that are all due at the same time?” Although these are about future situations, you can still sometimes answer with an example from a past experience. An example provides credibility to your answer. When you provide examples, try to use examples that are closely related to the job you’re applying for. Think about past work, volunteer, or school experiences that required skills similar to those needed for this job. Questions About Yourself Interviewers will ask you a lot of  questions about yourself. Some of these will be straightforward questions about your education and  work history. Others will be about your character such as your  strengths and weaknesses. To prepare for these kinds of questions, be sure to review your resume and cover letter thoroughly. Also look at a list of  common interview questions  to prepare answers for questions about yourself. Remember to answer honestly, but always put a positive spin on your answers. Questions About the Company The employer might also ask you questions about the company, and why you think you are a good fit for the position. To answer these questions, be sure to  research the company  ahead of time. Get a sense of the  company culture- its mission, the work environment, and what the company looks for in employees. Student Job Interview Questions and Answers High School Job Interview Questions and Answers:  Even though high school students dont have much, if any, work experience, its still important to be prepared to answer questions about your ability to do the job and your education and school activities. College Job Interview Questions and Answers:  For college students and recent graduates, its important to relate your education, extracurricular activities, and experience (work and campus) to the job for which you are applying. Here are sample questions you might be asked during an entry-level job interview and examples of the best way to answer. Entry Level Interview Questions and Answers:  The interview questions that hiring managers ask entry level candidates will typically be focused on why you are interested in the job and why the company should hire you. Review these entry-level interview questions and be prepared to respond effectively to the interviewer. Summer Job Interview Questions:  When you interview for a summer job youll be asked about your qualifications and your school schedule. Review the questions you will likely be asked during a summer job interview, plus tips on the best way to answer summer job interview questions. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, R.I.P.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, R.I.P. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, R.I.P. Today is the day of the Solzhenitsyn obituary (see here, here, and here.) In 1978, Solzhenitsyn gave the commencement address at Harvard. Some thought the speech was prophetic, others called it ayatollahlike. Either way, I think the section of his address concerning a society where the tissue of life is woven of legalistic relations is worth reading:Western society has given itself the organization best suited to its purposes, based, I would say, on the letter of the law. The limits of human rights and righteousness are determined by a system of laws; such limits are very broad. People in the West have acquired considerable skill in using, interpreting and manipulating law, even though laws tend to be too complicated for an average person to understand without the help of an expert. Any conflict is solved according to the letter of the law and this is considered to be the supreme solution. If one is right from a legal point of view, nothing more is required, nobody may mention that o ne could still not be entirely right, and urge self-restraint, a willingness to renounce such legal rights, sacrifice and selfless risk: it would sound simply absurd. One almost never sees voluntary self-restraint. Everybody operates at the extreme limit of those legal frames. An oil company is legally blameless when it purchases an invention of a new type of energy in order to prevent its use. A food product manufacturer is legally blameless when he poisons his produce to make it last longer: after all, people are free not to buy it. I have spent all my life under a communist regime and I will tell you that a society without any objective legal scale is a terrible one indeed. But a society with no other scale but the legal one is not quite worthy of man either. A society which is based on the letter of the law and never reaches any higher is taking very scarce advantage of the high level of human possibilities. The letter of the law is too cold and formal to have a beneficial influ ence on society. Whenever the tissue of life is woven of legalistic relations, there is an atmosphere of moral mediocrity, paralyzing man's noblest impulses. And it will be simply impossible to stand through the trials of this threatening century with only the support of a legalistic structure. - posted by brian

7 Questions for Barry Frangipane, Extreme Telecommuter and Author of The Venice Experiment

7 Questions for Barry Frangipane, Extreme Telecommuter and Author of The Venice Experiment 7 Questions for Barry Frangipane, Extreme Telecommuter and Author of The Venice Experiment Tired of the rat race, Barry Frangipane and his wife left the United States to experience life in Italy. While abroad, Barry was able to maintain his job with a U.S. based software company by telecommuting. As more employers are offering flexible work arrangements as benefits, it’s no surprise Barry had the option to “work from home,” but from a foreign country? In his book, The Venice Experiment, Barry discusses what he learned when he and his wife left everything behind to work and live abroad.’ CEO Sara Sutton had a chance to talk with Barry about his advice for making telecommuting (from home or anywhere!) a success, convincing the boss to say yes, finding balance, and more. Questions for Barry Frangipane: What tools allowed you to not only “work from home” but also from out of the country without missing any major events… other than the holiday party of course? It’s a pretty short list, actually. A good phone/cell phone. Fast, reliable Internet.  A scanner, VOIP, a way to receive faxes. And a quiet place to work, ideally an “office.” What lessons did you learn through trial and error while trying to work a U.S. based job out of Italy? The big-picture problems the we thought we’d have â€" adjusting to the culture and a different lifestyle, missing friends â€"  weren’t problems at all. And in fact, when we came back to the U.S., those same questions came up. So many of the lessons we learned were logistical: Keep the 8am-5pm EST schedule. Before I left, I chose not to communicate the move to clients since my hours and phone number were going to be the same, but the few who found out somewhat accidentally weren’t sure what to do with the time difference, and didn’t know when to call, so they didn’t call. When I reached out to them, they seemed a bit confused by the situation. Have a plan for mail forwarding. For us, it was to have mail sent to my parents in the States, who forwarded non-junk mail once each week, and would fax something if it was really critical. Figure out finances and cash. Direct deposit is a necessity, and other banking arrangements can be more of a challenge, so be sure to think them through. How were you able to convince your boss to let you work outside of the country? It wasn’t difficult, but it was methodical. I started working from home one day a week, then two, then five. It didn’t take too long, about a progression of about 10 weeks. A few things happened: 1) They got used to me working from home, and 2) We got the system down (scanner, fast Internet, VOIP).  Then I started attended weekly meetings from home via Skype.  After that was working smoothly and I’d proved that the concept of telecommuting worked, I talked to my boss about moving. I focused on productivity and promised that I’d be back in one year. In your book, The Venice Experiment, you detail your experiences and the obstacles you came across when working “from home” outside of the country. You also mention that you didn’t need a vacation because you were living in a favorite destination spot! How did you balance work and getting to enjoy Venice? We vacationed every weekend, and I worked 2pm â€" 11pm EST during the week, so I had half a day, every day, to explore Venice the museums, markets, etc.  Really, I led two lives! I was Venetian until noon in local cafes, discussing local issues, watching boat parades, and hanging out with with locals. I’d recommend taking a language course to learn the language. If you’re a couple, then you should both take it, even if only one is working. If you don’t, one person will be isolated.  Buy-in from both partners is crucial. Knowing the language opened so many doors for us, to experience things other than what the tourists experience. What advice can you offer to get over the hump and take the leap? SET THE DATE. You can talk about, “Oh, when this happens I’ll go,” or “I want to learn the language first” but you’ll never go. SET THE DATE, and magically things will start happening. Work your way backwards, each step is a small step, although the idea can be overwhelming. Would you do this experiment in extreme telecommuting again? Yes, and we’re talking about going to Paris this time. Do you have any regrets? Maybe coming back! A big thanks to Barry for sharing his amazing story with us. Readers, if you could telecommute from anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Inside a Projectionists Booth

Inside a Projectionists Booth Inside a Projectionists Booth Whether its for a panic-inducing horror film or sci-fi adventure, weve all been to the cinema. But how much do we really know about this popular pastime? Movie projection works because our brains retain an image for slightly longer, one twenty-fifth of a second to be exact, than we actually see it. Film, which is made up of single images, or frames, moves continuously along a feed disc, operated by an electric motor. Each frame pauses for a fraction of a second in front of the lamp and lens assembly. Here, the film is illuminated and projected onto the screen through a lens. The continuous succession of the frames causes our brains to connect each image and they seem to move. What about the work of the people behind the magic, upstairs in the projection booth? When it comes to 35mm film, its not as simple as just pressing play. Before the era of digital projection, it was a labor intensive job, says Joe Rivierzo, a third generation projectionist and executive board member of the New York City projectionist Local 306. Multiplexes were uncommon, fires arose, and equipment often malfunctioned. Anything could go wrong and we were responsible for the maintenance and the first aid. We were EMTs, if you will, in the projection booth, says Rivierzo. We werent certified technicians so we werent surgeons, but we had to know enough to apply first aid and that encompassed the film itself, the mechanics of the projectors, the electronics of the lamps, the mechanics of the platters, the sound systems, any one of those items could fail. Being a projectionist was a dangerous and difficult job before innovations made projection safer and automated. Projection booth with three 1936 Ernemann VII projectors (top), and with a single Phillips FP30 projector and non-rewind platters (bottom). Image: Wikimedia Commons. From Fire to Polyester The first available film used in commercial movie projection was nitrate, a transparent, plasticized film base. It produced a vivid, high contrast black and white image onto the screen. The quality of the image was rich and precise. With precision came a drawback, however, because nitrate film is incredibly flammable, and, because nitrocellulose is composed of oxygen, its very difficult to extinguish once ignited. When nitrate film base was used in movie projection, projectors used a carbon arc lamp the illuminate the images. These lamps were unenclosed and could generate immense heat or spark. There was a tremendous fear that if a fire broke out in an auditorium that there would be a stampede. People could get hurt, Rivierzo says. Many projection booth fires did occur due to the use of nitrate film during early decades of movie projection. To solve this issue, nitrate was discontinued in the 1950s. Polyester bases, which were stronger, flexible, and, most importantly, not highly flammable, took its place. A polyester base was also much more chemically stable and allowed for the construction of thinner films, which took up much less room. Carbon to Xenon Projectors used carbon arc lamps until the late 1960s. The length of those carbons for whatever reason was only twenty minutes which also dictated the length of the reel, says Rivierzo. Each reel could only be twenty minutes long or less, which meant that several reels of film had to be used for a single feature. Carbon arcs were costly, and had to be changed often. To save money and manpower, Xenon bulbs replaced the carbon arcs in film projectors. A Xenon bulb has a fused quartz outer shell, and a metal electrode at each end of the lamp. The bulb creates light by emitting electricity through xenon gas at high pressures. It gave a brilliant white light and it became inexpensive, says Rivierzo. Not only were they cheaper, but they lasted longer. These Xenon bulbs would run for a thousand hours before needing to be changed. The Changeover Prior to the 1960s, projectionists used a changeover system. Reel one would be fed through the projector, containing what was currently playing on the screen. Reel two would be in the second projector, and the projectionist would peer out of a one of the port holes in the projection booth waiting for a cue, usually a blinking dot in the corner of the screen. This first cue would tell the projectionist to turn on projector number two. Further past that cue there was another cue that would tell you to shut off projector one and turn to number two which would make it a seamless transition. So you [the viewer] thought that it was continuous, Rivierzo says. The projectionist would then have to load the third reel onto projector number one, and the process continues until all of the reels were played. Then, all of these reels had to be manually rewinded for the next show. That is, until the platter system was introduced. With this system, the individual reels are spliced together to create a single reel. The single reel containing the entire feature is wound onto a round, rotating table, or a platter, which is located next to the projector. Controlled by a payout mechanism, the platter feeds the film reel through a feed disc continuously through the projector. An empty platter below it, or the take up reel, collects the film already displayed on the screen and rewinds it. Rivierzo attributes this system to the rise of multiplexes. With the two projector system, if you had a Tenplex youd need ten guys for each auditorium waiting for a reel to end and put on the next reel. When you got these platter systems you didnt need that, Rivierzo says. For Further Discussion There was a tremendous fear that if a fire broke out in an auditorium that there would be a stampede. People could get hurt.Joe Rivierzo, Projectionist, Local 306

What You Need to Know About a Career at McDonalds

What You Need to Know About a Career at McDonalds What You Need to Know About a Career at McDonalds McDonalds is one of the largest companies in the world with  more than 37,000 restaurants across the globe, as of 2017. Employment opportunities with one of its many franchises typically offer both full-time and part-time positions and flexible schedules for students, working moms, and others. How Old Do You Have to Be? Child labor laws  determine  how old you have to be to work at McDonalds. Age limits vary from state to state, so check with your local McDonalds or look online to get the information regarding your  geographic area. Generally, most states adhere to federal child labor laws when setting their own regulations about child workers. Federal law mandates that teens age 14 and older are allowed to work in a number of different professions, including the restaurant industry. Federal law, however, imposes limits on how early  or late in the day teens can work and how many hours they can work. These restrictions are different during the school year than they are when school is not in session. When federal law and state law dont agree about child labor, the regulations that are the most restrictive are the laws that prevail. Job Search McDonalds allows you to conduct a  job search  for all open positions (including a crew member, shift manager, assistant manager, restaurant manager, and positions higher than middle-management) on its website. An online job application, along with an assessment, is available, and you can search for job openings by state. McDonalds also has an app you can use to apply from your smartphone or tablet. Interview Tips and Application Instructions If you want to ace your McDonalds interview, go no further than the source itself. The McDonalds website provides a number of interview tips  you can review prior to your interview. You also can  get an idea about the kinds of  interview questions  youll be asked by reviewing the  questions submitted by visitors to the McDonalds website. If you want, you even can  add your questions to the online list. Some McDonalds restaurants accept only  online applications, but if you need help filling it out, the company  provides basic application instructions in both English and Spanish. Benefits Because McDonalds is such a large company with restaurants in 120 countries it is able to offer its employees  benefits  that include such things as flexible schedules,  training and development programs, advancement opportunities within the corporate structure, and complimentary uniforms. In 2015, McDonalds launched its Archways to Opportunity program to assist employees in their educational endeavors in a variety of ways. As of 2018, the program had awarded more than $21 million in tuition assistance to more than 16,000 employees, according to McDonalds. It also offers assistance with improving English skills and earning high school diplomas. A broader advantage of working at a global company the size of McDonalds is that your experience, training, and skills are portable. If you relocate from one part of the country, or even the world, to another, you should be able to find a job without much worry.

How to Speed Up Your Hiring Process

How to Speed Up Your Hiring Process How to Speed Up Your Hiring Process In today’s tight accounting and finance job market, top talent is in high demand and short supply, leaving some managers scratching their heads over the hiring process. The way Robert Half’s Jamie Conley sees it, employers and hiring managers who have the competitive edge are those who can thoroughly assess candidates yet move quickly in the hiring process to make job offers. “We see candidates getting multiple interviews with a number of companies within days of posting their resume,” says Conley, a regional president for Robert Half. “On average, they’re in the job market for four to eight weeks, but the best candidates are often hired in one or two weeks.” How are companies able to speed up the selection and hiring process and keep from jamming the pipeline? Conley has three compelling suggestions: 1. Know what’s going on in the job market The best tools for getting up to date on employment trends are free. The Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance from Robert Half shows turnover is on the rise, as financial professionals realize they have more job opportunities. Not only that, companies are willing to pay a premium to get the professionals they want. More than half (54 percent) of CFOs in a Robert Half survey said they increased the starting salaries for new hires from what they made in their previous jobs, and the average increase was 10 percent. Robert Half’s Demand for Skilled Talent report shows it’s not just money that attracts candidates. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of workers said the chance to gain new skills is a critical consideration when making a career move. 2. Prime yourself for action If you haven’t reviewed your hiring process and procedures, that’s the first step. Whether you have a new position or you expect to fill a vacant one, you need an action plan - from announcing the position, to prescreening applicants, to preparing for and conducting interviews, to making the final decision. A majority of CFOs don't actively recruit for open roles, potentially losing out on talented candidates. See the infographic, below. Here are some questions to consider that could lead to time-saving practices: Do you keep an updated list of skilled candidates you think would be a good fit for your company? Have you asked your internal network for referrals or tried an employee referral program as a way to find accounting talent? Does your company have a website portal that makes job seekers jump through hoops to submit their applications? Have you created strong, thorough job descriptions that accurately capture the essence of your job opening and the skill sets you need Are you getting the information you need in pre-interview screenings? Do you ask for references early enough so contacting them doesn’t delay the process? Can you cut down any rounds of interviews and stages of approval? When a company schedules too many steps in the process, the candidate will continue to search - and may ultimately drop out, Conley warns. “The hiring process slows down when there are too many interviews as well as too many people involved in the decision-making process,” he says. “Hiring managers should look to streamline their vetting process so they can move quickly and secure top talent.” Conley says he’s seen companies take weeks to make a decision, and when they finally get to the offer stage, the candidate has already taken another job. “They are back to square one,” he says. “Not only did they lose the candidate, but there’s likely work piling up if the position is open with nobody in the role.” 3. Get an expert’s help with your hiring plan Keep in mind that you don’t have to execute your hiring plan alone. Working with a staffing agency can augment your recruitment efforts, offer insight into the employment market and help you fine-tune your strategies. “Companies that have figured out how to hire faster are typically ones that are leaning on specialized recruiting firms,” Conley says. “They can pick up the phone and get fast results of candidates that fit their role. Also, quickly bringing on temporary professionals and transitioning them into full-time staff is a great way to keep work flow going and the company moving in the right direction.” The keys to a successful hiring process are timing and organization. Your plan of action needs to expedite the process in this candidate-driven market so you are constantly moving toward a rejection or a job offer. If you can make your hiring decisions as quickly as possible and start onboarding high-performing people, you can bring your company more of its most valuable assets - its people.
